Accelerating the Engagement of CALD Workforce into Victorian Agriculture

19 Sept 2025

The Accelerating CALD Workforce project is about creating more opportunities for people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds to build long-term careers in agriculture and its supply chains and helping local businesses benefit from those skills across the LGAs of Moira, Campaspe and Greater Shepparton.

The project steering committee is chaired by Lisa Birrell of the University of Melbourne's Norvic Foods and the committee includes Sally Plunkett, (Plunkett Orchards), Steve Little (African House), representatives from C4GS, Murray Dairy, Fruit Growers Victoria, DEECA, Agriculture Victoria and the Gardiner Foundation.

The project is delivered by our local Primary Care Connect building on its networks across our local communities as well as its existing ag focused programs and services.

While the focus is on building safe, welcoming and supportive workplaces, and giving employers the tools to attract and keep staff, the project continues to identify practical needs that can benefit from a collective effort - for example public transport, learner driver programs, cultural awareness training, and the translation of materials, signage and communications for onboarding and training.

The insights have been captured through more than 40 conversations with employers, and multiple conversations with community groups and CALD employees.

Digital delivery and tools are also in the mix where they can further streamline and improve the experience for employers and employees.

The project is prioritising resources that employers can use straight away. These resources will remain after the project finishes, ensuring ongoing sustainability and long-term benefits for the region. We are also listening to CALD workers themselves, so their voices shape the future.
