Thank you and farewell to GSCC CEO Peter Harriott

The Committee for Greater Shepparton would like to thank and acknowledge the leadership of Greater Shepparton City Council’s outgoing CEO Peter Harriott.

From skyline to street level, our city and our region is moving ahead with confidence and pride. We can attribute this success to many things, but with so many headlines announcing suspensions, moderators and administrators for councils across Victoria, we cannot underestimate the importance of good governance and operational management from our local council.

With that firmly in mind, the Committee for Greater Shepparton would like to thank and acknowledge the leadership of Greater Shepparton City Council’s outgoing CEO Peter Harriott.

Since January 2016, Peter’s steadying leadership has helped our city and region move forward with confidence, as our local economy has grown stronger, and a remarkable number of major infrastructure projects have taken shape.

Council was key to securing state and federal funding for delivery of the Greater Shepparton Sports Precinct and the Shepparton Art Museum. These bookends have transformed the city’s entrances and what we have to offer residents and visitors.

Perhaps his proudest legacy springs from Peter’s passion for our natural environment. From the Botanic Gardens to the many tree plantings and revegetation projects, Peter leaves a greener, more sustainable Shepparton, not just for us today, but for generations to come.

The past eight years have also been notable for the frequency of extraordinary events from Covid lockdowns to the October 2022 floods. On each occasion Peter has been the backbone of the council’s response and has empowered mayors, councilors, and council staff to deliver their responsibilities.

We also thank Peter for his tireless advocacy for our shared priorities, notably the Goulburn Valley Bypass, GV Link, a new stadium and events centre, and the Murray Darling Basin plan.

Working and travelling together we have been able to deliver a united message to Canberra and Melbourne, coming away with a sense of achievement – and sometimes more, including front row seats to the Turnbull/Morrison leadership spill.

We haven’t seen eye to eye on every issue, but we have welcomed Peter’s willingness to share his knowledge and have a frank discussion that ensures positions are understood even when we agree to disagree.

In 2024 Greater Shepparton City Council will welcome a new CEO and our council membership may also change as we transition to wards for the October local government elections. Peter’s legacy of steady leadership and solid governance provides the foundations for Greater Shepparton to move through these changes while continuing to build and succeed.

At the time Peter took over in 2016 many of us felt Council needed a strong CEO to steady the ship and get it back on track. Peter was the perfect person for the job and should look back with pride on what he has achieved during his term.

On behalf of the board, CEO, management and members, thank you Peter for an excellent innings.
